The purpose of masking in public isn't to protect yourself (cloth masks won't protect you from much), it is to protect others from you.The number of people wearing so-called 'masks' which clearly are not N95 compliant is just ridiculous.
Wearing a mask might make them feel better, but it provides no protection whatsoever against COvid-19.
Even a simple cloth multilayer mask can significantly reduce the spread of infectious droplets from the wearer. It's a containment mechanism, albeit a far from from perfect one. Significantly better than nothing, though. Watch any of the videos online showing how coughing can spread droplets up to like 12 feet, while masking can reduce the distance traveled to a foot or two.
What they don't do is protect the wearer. You basically need an N95 for that. But, a lot of N95 masks out there in common use have valves that release when you exhale, so if you are an asymptomatic carrier, your infection is spread with little restriction. Places are starting to require non-valved masks.
In many/most places, we've been asked to wear masks FOR THE PURPOSE OF REDUCING SPREAD IN THE EVENT THE WEARER IS A CARRIER. Given the propensity for COVID-19 to create asymptomatic carriers, it's a prudent precaution.
I encourage everyone to comply.
